Jokakuji is a temple that was founded during the Muromachi period.
Records indicate that it was moved early on from Date-gun in Fukushima to Yonezawa in Yamagata.
Having received the patronage of the feudal lord Date Masamune, the temple was next moved to Iwadeyama. It was finally relocated to Sendai when that city became the seat of the domain government.

The main gate (sanmon) of the temple (designated a Important Cultural Property by the city of Sendai) was originally built as a gate for the funerary chapel of Misawa Hatsuko, known as Jogan'in (the mother of the fourth lord of the domain, Date Tsunamura).
Jogan'in is thought to have been the model for the character of Masaoka in "Meiboku sendai hagi," a renowned Kabuki play.
